Hourglassing‐ and locking‐free mesh distortion insensitive Petrov–Galerkin EAS element for large deformation solid mechanics

Abstract We present a novel geometrically nonlinear EAS element with several desirable features. First, Petrov–Galerkin ansatz significantly improves the element's performance in distorted meshes without loosing simple strain‐driven format. Second, recently proposed mixed integration point strategy is employed to improve robustness Newton–Raphson scheme. Finally and most importantly, we enhance spatial displacement gradient instead of usually modified deformation gradient. This allows construct an well‐known spurious instabilities compression tension as shown numerically supported by corresponding hypothesis. All all, this leads robust, stable, locking‐free, mesh distortion insensitive finite successfully applied wide range examples.
